Physical exfoliation is an option for everyone who desires a vibrant youthful appearance without the use of harsh chemicals which can be irritating to your skin. Done correctly, exfoliation purges your skin of dead cells to reveal a better complexion underneath. It is an excellent, noninvasive treatment for natural anti-aging results.
Exfoliation happens primarily in the outer layer of your skin, the stratum corneum. The dead skin cells there are naturally shed in a process called desquamation, which in some people is slowed by a number of factors including: hormone fluctuations, sun exposure, vitamin deficiencies and aging. That means most of us in need some intervention. Exfoliation, either mechanical or chemical, accelerates the shedding process, and when done right, reveals healthy skin cells.
Skin Care at Pure Derma Med Spa
Dr. Darter has over 15 years’ experience with cosmetic, metal, fragrance and preservative allergy, allergic contact dermatitis (which affects nearly 25% of women and 15% of men), and irritant contact dermatitis.
Women over 45 have a higher incidence of contact dermatitis (27%), and the face and neck are most frequently affected. They are commonly misdiagnosed as having acne, eczema, dry skin, and/or combination skin. An added complication is that 31% are allergic to plants. Exhaustive anamnesis is required to elucidate the problem.
There is an epidemic of women and men with rashes related to cosmetics, jewelry, skin, hair and body care products. Many patients end up spending thousands of dollars trying multiple different lines of skin, hair, body care products and makeups. Fear, frustration, desperation, and hopelessness compound their inability to love their current appearance. This is complicated by their inability to do preventative skin care due to their allergies (antiaging – i.e. sunscreen, antioxidants, and wrinkle prevention). These allergies also create an inability to enjoy spa time including facials, exfoliants, massages, and waxing.
Patients can become frustrated with hypoallergenic labels, expensive lines that are unusable to them. Leaving conditions untreated can then lead to embarrassment, fear/anxiety, and social isolation
As a result we became expert at diagnosing these problems. In 2017 we began developing a medical spa with the ability to service patients with the above struggles. To pamper them. To avoid creating a problem for them. We also started developing our own hypoallergenic line of skin care.
Types of Exfoliation
At Pure Derma Med Spa, we perform both of the main types of exfoliation:
Chemical exfoliations use fruit enzymes or acids like glycolic acid, derived from sugar, and lactic acid, which is made from milk. Chemical exfoliants gently break the bonds that hold dead skin cells together, so they can be easily rinsed away.
For our new patients who are new to exfoliation, we generally start with enzymes because they’re gentler and better tolerated than acids while providing a fine, smooth polish.
As the need arises we may recommend to a patient that on subsequent visits they graduate to acids. Alpha hydroxy acids – typically glycolic, lactic and citric – are stronger exfoliants than enzymes.
No rubbing or scrubbing is performed for strictly chemical exfoliation because the enzymes or acids do most of the exfoliating work.
Mechanical exfoliations use beads, brushes and razors (dermaplaning) to lift dead cells off the skin. For our patients with a history of irritation or allergy from cleansers and lotions, we generally recommend mechanical exfoliation. Using just the brush eliminates the need for the ingredients that the skin react to.
When performed by a knowledgeable practitioner, the bristles of the brush lightly yet firmly graze the skin to get the optimal benefit of their back-and-forth, pore-cleaning motion.
